This wonderful small Murano glass mask with black and white glass canes is a replica of the famous "bauta", one of the typical masks of Venetian tradition. This was one of the most popular disguises, used by both men and women, in the old Carnival, especially from the 18th century, and still very popular and widely used today.
The "bauta", usually in white, was generally accompanied by a black tricorne hat and a long black cloak, called "tabarro". It was often used during romantic rendez-vous, and whenever there was the need to court or be courted freely, guaranteeing total anonymity: its peculiar shape altered the timbre of one's voice, and also allowed for ease of eating and drinking.
This mask rests on a stand and is available in three different sizes and wide range of colors.
